Discover China’s rich story from its ancient origins to 1800 in this introductory course, where we will trace dynastic change, cultural traditions, and long-term social and economic transformations. You’ll study key themes — Confucianism, the civil exam system, Buddhism and Daoism, gender and frontier relations, and China’s ties to the wider world — while considering how the pre-modern past shapes contemporary Chinese politics and popular culture.
